A LED street light practically uses LED or Light Emitting Diodes for the reason that they have extremely long life spans. They can be self-sufficient and does not need the electric utility for power when integrated into an off-grid solar energy set.
LED street light don’t have filaments that can burn out fast. They also don’t contain toxic chemicals such as mercury as compared to traditional mercury-vapor lamps or high-pressure sodium lamps.
A LED street light depending on the model can operate up to 100,000 hours. A LED street light also have less maintenance costs because of their durability and longer life span. They also give off less heat unlike other bulbs. And since they last so long, LED street light is suitable for places where changing light bulbs is expensive, not so convenient, or otherwise difficult.
LED street light is highly efficient in terms of energy consumption. When compared to a compact fluorescent lamp or CFL, LED actually have doubled their energy efficiency. Traditional street light can only muster 58 lumens per watt while LED street light produces 80 lumens per watt.
LED street light is now advocated in the Philippines as a way of cutting out carbon emissions because of their power efficiency and long lifespan.
Also, LED street light does not need to warm up and are very quick to turn on. And because LED street light do not produce ultraviolet light, bugs are not attracted to it which avoids damage from these insects.
LED street light produce “directional” light which is light emitted in one direction, instead of a diffused glow, LED street light can be used to focus light on a specific place.
And finally, unlike CFL, LED street light can be dimmed, which provides more flexibility and control of levels of light intensity.
